history of social networking
(from digital planet podcast; BBC)
social networking started in 1996 with the "six degrees" website.
Kent was the first user of Six Degrees who I knew of.
Six degrees never caught on - because the world wasn't ready for it.
When the printing press was first invented, it took some time for it to catch on too.
But not long…
One of my dad's favorite quotes was:
one year after Guttenberg invented the printing press,
the number of books printed in one year was equal to the number of books that all the scribes had laboriously creaetd since the beginning of that process.
